- 31. jan. 2022 · Endret31. jan. 2022 · EndretNågon kort sammanfattning vad som hänt här senaste året?31. jan. 2022 · Endret31. jan. 2022 · EndretWhy Boston Beer Stock Lost Another 10% in September Howard Smith October 3, 2021 What happened Up until mid-July 2021, Boston Beer (NYSE: SAM) had been a high-flying stock with diluted earnings per share (EPS) more than doubling since the start of 2020, and its shares soaring more than 150% in that time. But that all changed on July 22 when the company reported a huge miss on second-quarter results, the culprit being the previously fast-growing hard seltzer segment. The stock has been almost cut in half since that earnings report, and that slide continued through September, with shares falling another 10.6%, according to data provided by S&P Global Market Intelligence. So what For the second quarter period ended June 26, 2021, the company said weaker sales of its popular Truly hard seltzer product, along with general softness in the beer industry, caused the shortfall in sales and earnings. Boston Beer shares fell 26% the day following that report. And the stock has continued to slide ever since. The company provided investors with a business update on Sept. 8, saying "the market for hard seltzer products has continued to experience decelerating growth trends." While the Truly brand products are expected to gain market share in the category, Boston Beer cited industry reports that have decreased expected overall hard seltzer retail sales compared to previously released predictions from both May and July 2021. Now what With volume trends worsening, Boston Beer said it had to withdraw its 2021 financial guidance. Inventory write-offs and volume-related fees owed to contracted brewers will cause its full-year diluted EPS to fall short of its previous estimate. Shareholders looking at the future should pay attention to some new innovative products the company is launching to pivot from the sinking hard seltzer market. The same day it updated financial guidance, Boston Beer announced the launch of a new sparkling cocktail product. Its Bevy Long Drink "sparkling citrus refresher" will be available in two flavors beginning in early November. Boston Beer chief marketing officer Lesya Lysyj said in a statement introducing the product, "It's cocktail-inspired, easy to drink, and full-flavored, yet highly refreshing unlike any beer or pre-mixed cocktail out there." Earlier this year, the company said it had begun research and development work on non-alcoholic cannabis beverages. These new products are what shareholders will need to focus on to gauge when, or if, sales can reach the levels previously expected. Overall market trends remain important as a rising tide can lift all boats, but successful new products are likely what it would take to bring Boston Beer shares back to prior highs. Fra fool.com
